Deadly Roads

Although hardly scientific, on Monday, November 24, the Two Rivers Tribune observed pedestrian traffic at 2 pm in downtown Hoopa. Within five minutes 10 pedestrians were counted within a 200-foot radius of the Hoopa Mini-Mart, half of whom crossed the highway without using either of the two crosswalks. One pedestrian was observed using the crosswalk. Hoopa, Karuk and Yurok lands amount to less than 25 percent of Humboldt County’s total land mass, but these areas were the site of 33 percent of all traffic related fatalities in 2009, and over 50 percent of the county’s fatalities in 2008. Fatal Car Crash Near Hawkins Bar

Saturday, April 30 was a fateful day for two Salyer residents, one a male and one a female. The driver of a 2002 Jeep Liberty, a male, was traveling westbound on Highway 299 near Hawkins Bar around 11pm when he lost control of his vehicle and collided into a dirt embankment and rolled according to a press release issued by the California Highway Patrol. Permanent Road Repair for Stretch of Highway 299

A stretch of Highway 299 just 15 miles east of Blue Lake has been routinely patched for the past several years due an under-the-road slide. According to a press release from Caltrans, recent weather conditions have worsened the acceleration of the slide to a rate of two to six inches per day. Read More →

Dunsmuir Man Arrested for Rape on Highway 299 Near Blue Lake

Shortly after 11 p.m., deputies conducted a vehicle investigation on a van parked on Old Highway 299, near Blue Lake. Deputies contact Benjamin Baszler, 25, who was seated inside the van. Baszler, a registered sex offender, said he had just finished “having sex” with the woman in the back of the van. Read More →

Pavement Project Scheduled on Highway 299, One Lane Closure Expected
