VOICES: Penny Johnson Retiring From School Board
Dear Two Rivers Tribune,
My time to retire has come. In the past nine or so years, I’ve seen and participated in so many parts of change. Our campuses are getting bigger to contain our growing student body.
I have had to deal with unpleasantness as students and parents have made bad choices and struggles back to some amazing changes that have made them into good people.
The last four years I served only because no one stepped up to represent Orleans, but some of the things that happened during this time has made memories of how our struggles have led us to meet some extraordinary people and they have led us through the tough times.
The other trustees I have served with have become very good friends and have come to respect their devotion to this school district. I made changes in friends because, above all else, you must be true to the oath you take to keep you school and the district working for the children. My kids now have their own kids in school. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever envision myself in the places I have lived thru in the past eight-and-a-half years, but I would never trade one of those memories.
To the new trustee, always rely on your fellow board members, we are here to represent our schools but ultimately we are a working school board. Never make a promise you can’t keep and always be careful to never put yourself in a position where you put your position at risk.
This can be one of the best experiences of your life. Take care of yourself because there will be times you feel you may implode on yourself.
I have been blessed as family love and my faith have kept me steady when sometimes wondered at three o’ clock in the morning if this was all worth it. I look at our accomplishments and have decided “It most certainly was.”
To my fellow board members, you will always be in my thoughts and prayers, it has been an honor to serve with the present and past members and I wish you all the very best.
Thank you very much for your time,
Penny M. Johnson
