Heroin Discovered in Hoopa Bust
Press Release, Hoopa Valley Tribal Police
On Oct. 2, 2013 at about 8:54 pm officers from the Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Department were on patrol in the Rays Food Place Parking lot.
Suspect Jason ‘Maui’ Smith, 31, of Hoopa pulled behind the officer and began yelling and cursing at the officer. The officer contacted Smith, who was banned from Ray’s Food Place due to a previous incident. Smith continued to curse at the officer. A Ray’s Food Place employee confirmed that Smith is not allowed on the property. The employee signed a private person’s arrest form for Smith trespassing.
The officer re-contacted Smith, who had just left the parking lot and parked near the Hoopa Post Office directly behind Ray’s Food Place. Smith immediately began cursing at the officer. The officer asked Smith to exit his vehicle. Smith refused to comply and began making phone calls. Officers removed Smith from the vehicle while Smith continued to fail to comply with officers commands. Smith was eventually placed in handcuffs. During the arrest, officers smelled the odor of Marijuana emitting from Smith’s vehicle.
During a search of Smith, officers located four Zip-lock style baggies containing suspected heroin. One baggie contained five smaller baggies, also containing suspected heroin. Also found on Smith were a glass pipe, several small unused Zip-lock style baggies and three small baggies of suspected Methamphetamine. All baggies weighed similar amounts consistent with the sale of illegal drugs.
Upon searching Smith’s vehicle, officers discovered 28 grams of Marijuana, two digital scales with suspected heroin residue, a loaded Colt AR15 assault rifle with a 30-round high capacity magazine, a cane sword, and an empty pistol holster.
Items located during the arrest totaled about one gram of suspected Methamphetamine, 28 grams of Marijuana and nine grams of suspected Heroin.
Smith was arrested and charged with PC 602(o) trespassing, H&S 11351 (possession of heroin for sales), H&S 11352 (Transportation of heroin), H&S 11370.1 (Possession of a firearm and controlled substances), PC 29900(a)(1) (Felon in possession of a firearm with a prior) PC 24410 (Possession of a Cane Sword), and PC 148(a)(1) (resisting or delaying an officer)
Smith was transported and booked into Humboldt County Correctional Facility.
