Auto Accident Claims Life of Retired Teacher

A single vehicle accident near Blue Lake on Highway 299 claimed the life of a retired Trinity Valley Elementary School teacher, John Mason, on Sunday, March 10 just after 4pm.

According to a California Highway Patrol news release Mason was driving a 2011 Toyota westbound on Highway 299 east of Buckley Road.

For unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway, traveled down an embankment, overturned, and struck several trees.

The Blue Lake Volunteer Fire Department and CHP helicopter assisted at the scene. One-way traffic control was conducted intermittently over the course of approximately four hours in order to remove the vehicle.

Mason, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
