Opinion-River Rights Committee, Hoopa

Dear Editor,

This week will be the last week of the Salmon for Elders Pilot Project. We will be taking salmon at the Food Distribution warehouse downtown and delivering to Tribal elders through Thursday, Oct 4. We encourage anyone who can to donate. We want to be sure all the elders who want salmon are able to have some. We also encourage the community to donate to others in need as this record salmon run continues.

In the last three weeks the Hoopa Valley Tribe and Tribal AmeriCorps have given out 222 salmon to 112 elders. Donations have slowed since the beginning of the program with less then a third of elders served last week compared to the first week. Let’s make this week count.

We want to thank all of Hoopa’s awesome fishermen and Food Distribution for being so helpful and generous. If you want to donate fish don’t forget fish need to be gutted, fresh and on ice. We’d also like to announce our weekly raffle winners, Chucky Carpenter and two-time winner Ticmil Ashley.
