In Loving Memory: Lafayette “Jug” Davis

Lafayette “Jug” Davis: Born October 3, 1935 in Hoopa CA. passed away on September 9, 2012 surrounded by his daughter, son in-law, and grandchildren in O’Brien, Oregon. He traveled back and forth between Hoopa and O’Brien a few times. He made the choice to stay in Oregon to complete his life and be the father and grandfather that he never got a chance to be, and built a relationship with his family. He had the greatest of care from Love Joy Hospice out of Grants Pass, with nurses that came in everyday to make sure he was not in pain. They were a phone call away, anytime that he needed anything, they were there and he loved them.
He is survived by his sister Mildred Nixon, daughters Annette Davis-Ortiz, Dionne Meadows, sons Donald Jay Oliver, Todd “Bear” Schlueter, and Jr Gooden, Grandchildren: Evangelina, Mari, Lafayette “L.D”, Witisu, Cheyanna, Dimitri, Madaline, Leaida “Mazie”, Little Bear, Sincere Lee, and Great grandchild Kimaia.. Terri Ammon, Stephanie Jarnaghan, and Arnold Davis Jr. who he considered his other children. He had many friends, family, and relatives.
He was preceded into death by his Parents Lafayette and Ollie, George Nixon Jr., Sisters Dorthy Smith, Wilma Harding, Patsy Davis, Betty Stass, Helen Thomas, Son Doug Denver, Brother Vernon Tug Davis Sr., cousins/brothers Allen Davis, Vernon Bussell Jr, and Arnold “Jimbo” Davis.
He was an amazing athlete and had been chosen as Athlete of the Century. He went to college at Humboldt State where he played football and served in the Army from August 1958-August 1960. He loved to watch his sports channel, to coach, and read his newspaper while sitting in the parking lot of Ray’s, cruising around the Valley, and sitting at Blue Slide. He was an advocate for education and always supported the youth. He loved to fish and he loved his dogs.

The Wake was held on Friday September 14, at his home on Hwy 96 Hoopa, services September 15, at 1:00 pm at the Neighborhood Facilities Hwy 96, burial at the Davis Cemetery. Gathering at the Community Center on Loop Rd following the burial service.
