Warriors Wrestle to Victory

The Hoopa High Warrior wrestling team dominated the North Coast Classic hosted by Eureka High on January 20.

Hoopa High took home its first team title in school history edging out large schools like Eureka, Del Norte, and Enterprise of Redding with a total combined team score of 162 points. Head coach Mike Lee Sr., lead four wrestlers to the finals with three earning first place medals. Hoopa had ten wrestlers place at the North Coast Classic to secure their team title. In the 108 pound division J.T. McKnight pinned Josh Casaueria of McKinleyville in the first round.

Deverous Frank capped off his day with a victory in the finals against Bernardo Avalos of Ukiah. Avalos jumped to a three point lead early in the match and Deverous trailed by two points with a score of 3-5 in the second round. In the third round Deverous was able to score four points with a takedown and two nearfall points to secure the gold.

Wendell White placed fourth and Justin Colegrove placed fifth, both in the 128 pound division. Joe Yale placed fourth at 134 pounds, and Jarred Wilder placed sixth. Joe James went the distance at 154 pounds with Kevin Pardini of Ukiah, and placed second. Louis Cosce pinned Matt Jones of St. Bernards to place third at 162 pounds. Orion Cosce walked away with another first place finish in the 172 pound weight class.

Robert Dorgan placed fifth at 287 pounds. Warrior wrestling hit the road the following weekend, this time headed for Santa Rosa for the Puma Classic.

Eight wrestlers competed there, but only one advanced to the final round. Orion Cosce was the lone warrior to reach the finals squaring off against Tommy Bender of Willits.

Orion jumped out to an early lead in the first round scoring two points for a takedown, then Bender would score one point for an escape. The first round ended with a score of 2-1. Bender took down Orion early in the second for two more points making the score 3-2, Bender. Cosce quickly scored two more points for a reversal to gain the lead and upper hand.

Cosce worked fast to turn Bender to his back and hold him there for a count five seconds to score three. Although Bender made several attempts to take down Cosce, he didn’t score another point in the match.

Cosce has an impressive record of 24 wins and only 1 loss in the 170 weight class.

Three wrestlers placed at the Puma Classic; J.T. McKnight placed 4 in the 108 pound class; Justin Colegrove placed 5 in the 128 weight class; and Robert Dorgan placed 5 in the 287 pound weight class.

The Warriors will return home for the Humboldt-Del Norte championships at Fortuna high on February 18.
