By Jacqueline Letalien, Kim Yerton Memorial Library

Through the school year, the Kim Yerton Memorial Library features the Share A Story reading program. This event occurs on the second Wednesday of every month from 4-6pm. The program is co-sponsored by KEET TV’s Ready to Learn Service and First 5 Humboldt.

Share A Story is a way to inspire youth to build positive reading habits. Reading is an essential key to education that improves learning capacity. Hearing stories also encourages the ability to listen which is essential to good communication among people.

January’s event is Wednesday, the 11th. The program includes a movie, story, craft project. For each family that attends there is a free giveaway book.  The topic of this month’s event is “Bears, Hibernation.”  Adults as well as the younger ones are invited to participate in this family, community oriented event.

Another program is welcoming school classes to visit the library.  There are two classes and one after school program who currently visit.  This is an opportunity to learn about library, use, collection and responsible borrowing habits.  It is also possible to read a story during the visit.  All grades are welcome. Teachers are invited to call Jacqueline at (530)  625-5082 to set up a time in advance.

Library staff will be working to design more programs in future for adults and young adults as well as children. If any members of the community have suggestions for desired programming such as reading clubs, public events as well as suggested book acquisitions, please let us know.  We are happy to consider such ideas and to work on manifesting the possibilities.  This library is a wonderful community resource and it belongs to all of the people of Hoopa.
First time library cards are free and acquiring them entails filling out a short form. Replacement cards cost $3. The  open hours of the library are:  Tuesday 10am-1 pm, 2-5 pm; Wednesday 10am-1pm, 2- 8pm; Thursday – Saturday 10am-1pm, 2-5pm.
