RCAA Brings Job Counseling to Hoopa and Willow Creek

By ALLIE HOSTLER, Two Rivers Tribune

Jobs are hard to come by in Eastern Humboldt County.

Despite a myriad of helpful programs available on the north coast, the unemployment rate in the eastern portions of the county reach as high as 70 percent.

To help address the problem Redwood Community Action Agency (RCAA) is offering free one-on-one employment counseling in Hoopa and Willow Creek on Wednesday, June 15.

“Unfortunately our funding for this program is coming to an end,” Marianna Nava of RCAA said. “We need to do more outreach in the most rural parts of Humboldt County.”

Nava said RCAA is conducting similar employment counseling in Fortuna, Redway and Garberville. Also, RCAA is partnering with the Hoopa Tribal Employment Rights Office (TERO) to offer a day-long workshop on June 29 in Hoopa.

Both events are intended to assist job seekers with resume preparation, career explorations, finding employment workshops, trainings, job searches and more.

The target audience are those who aren’t familiar with the process of applying for and seeking out jobs.

“We are committed to servicing the most underserved parts of the community,” Nava said. “Sometimes transportation is a challenge. There are resources available on the Coast, such as the Job Market, but it’s tough for the rural residents to get to those locations on a regular basis.”

RCAA will bring recent job listings and Internet job searching resources to the one-on-one job counseling sessions. The day-long workshop with TERO will provide pointers on how to write a resume, and proper interview etiquette among other things.
