All-Indian Basketball Tournament Fundraising Efforts Continue at Lucky Bear Casino

This year’s annual All Indian Basketball Tournament will be held May 12-15 in Hoopa, just about six weeks from now. Since the tournament is celebrating its 50th anniversary, the pot for first place will be $10,000 and Pendleton leather-sleeve jackets. A total of 25 teams will be participating this year, some traveling from as far away as Canada, New York state, and Minnesota.

Fundraising continues. A bingo tournament last Friday evening raised $200. Lola ‘Kadoo’ Henry said there will be another bingo tournament this coming Saturday at Lucky Bear Casino beginning at 6 pm, with hopes of raising at least $3,000.

Henry and a group of dedicated volunteers meet every Monday at 6 pm in the Hoopa Tribal Council Chambers at the Neighborhood Facility. The group includes board members Henry, Kelly Davis, Rowdy Robbins, Jessica Mabry and non-board members Lana Herder and Patti Joseph. The group will soon have a working meeting with the Hoopa Tribal Council to submit a request for a $2,000 donation for the tournament.

“I have faith that it’s all going to come together,” said Henry. “I have positive feelings and put it in the hands of everyone who’s helping us,” said Henry.

Henry said several tribes are helping sponsor the event – the Hoopa, Yurok and Blue Lake Tribes and that queen candidates are hustling royalty contestants to help find old photos of past royalty members.

The committee is still actively seeking volunteers for the tournament. If you would like to help call Henry at (530) 625-4255.
